Do non-citizens get social security numbers?

2.1 million SSNs were issued to non-citizens in FY2024 because they’re authorized to WORK here either via TPS or H-1B work visas. Immigrants pay about $96B in taxes and social security contributions for which they cannot later collect.

This isn’t about the national debt as that is a totally different pool of money.

According to the SSA.GOV website:

“We have a way for noncitizens to apply for Social Security number (SSN) cards as part of the immigration process. When you apply for your immigrant visa with the U.S. Department of State, you can also apply for an SSN card at the same time.”

Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022. Most of that amount, $59.4 billion, was paid to the federal government while the remaining $37.3 billion was paid to state and local governments.
