President Donald Trump proposed issuing $2,000 “tariff dividend” checks to Americans on several occasions starting in November 2025.
Initial Promises: The idea was introduced in November 2025, with Trump stating in a Truth Social post on Nov. 10 that payments would go to “low and middle income USA Citizens” using revenue from tariffs.
Timeline and Target: Trump mentioned the checks would be issued in “the middle of next year” (2026) while speaking to reporters on Nov. 17, 2025. Later, he told The New York Times in early 2026 that he would look to send them towards the end of the year.
Questioning the Promise: In a January 2026 interview with The New York Times, when asked about the $2,000 checks, the president asked, “When did I do that?”.
